Meet the Herbs: Nature’s Helpers for Stress, Sleep & Energy

Depot Blog

Sometimes life can feel like one long to-do list. Work, family, errands, appointments, meals, laundry—and somewhere in the middle of all that, we’re supposed to remember to relax! It’s no wonder so many of us are looking for simple, natural ways to support our well-being.

Long before there were pharmacies, supplement aisles, or little bottles of pills, there were plants. For thousands of years, people around the world have looked to leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, and berries for ways to support health and well-being. Ancient Egyptians recorded herbal remedies on papyrus. Traditional Chinese medicine developed an extensive botanical tradition. Ayurveda, India’s ancient system of wellness, has used plants such as ashwagandha and holy basil for generations. Indigenous peoples throughout North America developed their own deep knowledge of the plants growing around them.

In other words, the idea of turning to plants for wellness isn’t new at all. It’s one of the oldest human traditions there is.

Modern science has given us a much better understanding of what’s actually inside these plants. Researchers have identified thousands of naturally occurring compounds in herbs and have studied how some of them interact with the human body. That doesn’t mean every traditional herbal remedy lives up to its claims—but it does help explain why some plants have remained part of wellness traditions for centuries.

So, What Makes an Herb “Medicinal”?
Plants are chemical factories. They produce compounds that help them survive, protect themselves, attract pollinators, and interact with their environment. Some of those same compounds can have interesting effects when humans consume or use the plants.

Take ginger, for example. Its distinctive compounds are responsible for its spicy flavor and have been studied for their effects on digestion and nausea. Peppermint contains menthol, which gives it that familiar cooling sensation. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound that has attracted considerable scientific interest for its anti-inflammatory effects.

And then there are the herbs traditionally associated with relaxation and everyday stress support. Chamomile has been enjoyed as a calming tea for generations. Lavender has a long history of use for its soothing aroma. Passionflower and valerian have traditionally been used in preparations intended to encourage relaxation and restful sleep.

Herbs for Stress, Sleep & Energy
These days, many of us are looking for natural ways to deal with some very modern problems: busy schedules, everyday stress, restless nights, and that afternoon slump.

Ashwagandha and holy basil, both important plants in Ayurvedic traditions, are popular today in wellness products designed to support the body’s response to everyday stress. Ginseng has a long history of traditional use for vitality and energy, while rhodiola has become popular in modern herbal supplements aimed at supporting and sustaining energy. Unlike a quick hit of caffeine, herbal approaches are often about supporting the body’s overall resilience and helping you feel more balanced and ready to take on the day.

When it’s time to wind down, familiar herbs such as chamomile, valerian, passionflower, and lavender are often part of relaxing evening routines. Sometimes that means a cup of herbal tea; sometimes it’s an herbal supplement or a few drops of essential oil.

The important thing to remember is that herbs aren’t magic—and different herbs affect people differently. Think of them as one piece of a larger wellness picture that also includes good food, adequate sleep, movement, and time to simply slow down.

From Grandma’s Tea Cup to Today’s Supplement Shelf
One of the most interesting things about herbal wellness is how much traditional knowledge has carried forward.

Maybe your grandmother reached for peppermint tea after dinner. Maybe you’ve used ginger when your stomach wasn’t feeling quite right. Maybe lavender reminds you of your mother’s linen closet, or chamomile tea is part of your bedtime routine.

Today, those same plants can show up in teas, tinctures, capsules, powders, essential oils, and carefully formulated supplements. The packaging may have changed, but the basic idea remains remarkably familiar: plants can be powerful.

At the Depot, you’ll find a wide variety of herbs and herbal products, from familiar favorites to plants you may have never heard of. Our health and supplement section is a great place to explore, ask questions, and learn more about the traditional uses of different herbs.

If you’re thinking about trying an herbal supplement, remember that herbs can interact with medications and aren’t appropriate for everyone. If you’re pregnant or nursing, taking medications, or managing a health condition, it’s always wise to talk with your healthcare professional before adding something new to your routine.

A Little Respect for the Plant
There’s a reason humans have been fascinated by medicinal plants for thousands of years. They’re beautiful, complex, surprisingly powerful—and we’re still learning about them.

So the next time you brew a cup of herbal tea or walk past the herbs in our wellness section, take a closer look. Behind that familiar little package may be a plant with hundreds or even thousands of years of human history behind it. That’s pretty remarkable.
