Mama Mia – It’s Tomato Time!

Depot Blog, Featured

My mama always said, “A great tomato isn’t rushed. Give it sunshine, good soil, a little patience, and plenty of love—and it will reward you.” Turns out, Mama knew what she was talking about.

There’s nothing quite like the first bite of a perfectly ripe summer tomato. That burst of sweet, tangy flavor, the juicy texture, and the unmistakable taste of something that has spent its days soaking up the California sunshine. Tomato season is one of those special times of year when gardens overflow, farm stands fill up, and everyone starts searching for excuses to add tomatoes to every meal.

Here in the Sierra Nevada foothills, we’re lucky to have some of the best tomato-growing conditions around. Our warm summer days, cool evenings, and diverse growing environments create the perfect recipe for tomatoes with incredible flavor and character.

Mama’s Secret: Let Tomatoes Take Their Time
One thing my mama always understood was that tomatoes need time. The best tomatoes aren’t picked before they’re ready—they’re allowed to ripen slowly on the vine, soaking up the sun and developing their natural sweetness.

Our local climate gives tomatoes exactly what they love. Long, sunny days help them build flavor, while cooler nights help maintain the balance of sugars and acidity that makes a tomato taste truly special. The result? Tomatoes that are rich, juicy, and bursting with that old-fashioned garden flavor that reminds you why summer tomatoes are worth waiting for.

The Mother Lode also offers a wonderful variety of growing conditions. From lower elevations with hot summer afternoons to cooler areas where tomatoes mature more slowly, local growers are able to produce an amazing range of varieties throughout the season.

But what really gets Mama excited is the Mid-Summer Heirloom Explosion! By late July and August, gardens and farm stands start showing off their tomato treasures. Heirloom tomatoes are the colorful characters of the tomato world. They come in shades of deep purple, bright orange, golden yellow, green, pink, and every beautiful shade in between.

Some are perfectly shaped, while others look a little funny—but Mama always said, “Don’t judge a tomato by its wrinkles.” And she was right. Those unusual shapes, cracks, and bumps are often signs of some of the most flavorful tomatoes around.

Unlike many commercial tomatoes bred for shipping and shelf life, heirloom varieties are grown for taste. Varieties like Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, Green Zebra, Black Krim, and Mortgage Lifter each bring their own unique flavor—from sweet and fruity to rich and savory. Because many heirlooms are delicate and don’t travel well, enjoying them locally is the best way to experience them at their peak.

A perfectly ripe heirloom tomato, still warm from the summer sun, is one of those simple pleasures that makes me stop and say, “Now that’s what a tomato is supposed to taste like!”

Mama’s Tips for Picking the Perfect Tomato
When choosing tomatoes, Mama always had a few tricks: First, pick it up. A good tomato should feel heavy for its size—that means it’s full of juicy goodness. Next, give it a gentle squeeze. A ripe tomato should have just a little give, but shouldn’t feel soft or mushy.

Finally, take a sniff. A truly delicious tomato has that wonderful fresh, earthy aroma near the stem that tells you something special is waiting inside. And don’t worry about tomatoes that aren’t perfectly round or picture-perfect. Some of the best-tasting tomatoes are the ones with a little personality.

Once you bring your tomatoes home, treat them kindly. Keep them on the kitchen counter at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. The refrigerator may seem like the obvious place for storage, but cold temperatures can dull their flavor and affect their texture.

One of the joys of shopping locally is tasting food at the moment it was meant to be enjoyed. Local tomatoes don’t have to travel thousands of miles or be picked weeks before they’re ripe. They come to you with all the flavor, freshness, and character that make summer produce so special. Here are a few summer tomato recipes to get you started.
